Hello, I’m Grace. Shasta Lily Cottage is my weblog about learning to live beautifully and with simplicity. I live in Far Northern California with my husband Jon and my collie, Rowdy.
I grew up at the foot of a rugged, snowy mountain in a house my dad built himself, spending most of my time exploring the woods alone and immersed in British children’s literature. The downside is that I have struggled to adapt to the world as it is; I have never liked machines or plastic much, and I’ve always sensed a hollowness in how we live our lives today. However, like most people who grew up in the ’80s and beyond, I’ve had little idea how to do things myself and I’ve felt the pressure to give in to convenience. I’ve spent too much time reading trash books, watching trash TV, and doomscrolling online. This weblog is my attempt to fight back, to focus on older, quieter ways of living, to see how they can benefit us now (without falling into mere traditionalism) and how we can live more humanly against the onslaught of the machines. In otherwords, seeking the answer to the question, what good things should we carry forward into the future in order to remain human?
A few notes about me:
- I’m married and have a dog; we would have liked to have children but have not been blessed in that way.
- I don’t believe we can recover any era in the past, but we can recover ways of living that are more conducive to human flourishing and connection with God.
- I love tea and textiles.
- I fully believe in Charlotte Mason’s principle, “Self-education is the only possible education; the rest is mere veneer laid on the surface of [one’s] nature.”
